Merino is sold by grams per square meter: 125–150 for high-output and warm weather, 200 for three-season versatility, 250+ for real cold. When in doubt, 200 is the sweet spot — warm in camp, breathable on the move.
Why merino costs more (and when it's worth it)
Merino fibers are finer than human hair, which is why it doesn't itch, insulates while damp, and resists odor for days. Pay the premium if you backpack multi-day (odor control), hike in cold damp climates (damp insulation), or run cold. Save your money if you mostly day-hike in summer — a $25 synthetic does fine.

Does merino wool itch?
Quality merino (17.5–19.5 micron) doesn't itch for most people. If you're sensitive, look for ultrafine 15.5-micron garments or merino-synthetic blends.
How do you wash merino?
Machine wash cold on gentle with mild detergent, lay flat or line dry. Skip fabric softener — it coats the fibers and kills wicking.
How long do merino base layers last?
Expect 2–4 seasons of regular use; thinner weights wear faster at the cuffs and under pack straps. Blends with a nylon core (like Smartwool's Classic line) roughly double durability.
