Dermatologists agree: clothing beats sunscreen. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98% of UV, never sweats off, and needs no reapplication. After a season of desert and alpine testing, here's what works.

What UPF actually means

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures fabric-level UV blocking: UPF 30 blocks ~96.7% of UV (good), UPF 50 blocks ~98% (excellent — the practical ceiling). A white cotton tee is roughly UPF 5, and drops to UPF 3 when wet. That gap is why fabric choice matters.

*OR Echo trades maximum UPF for maximum breathability — the right call when it's 100°F, per our desert testers.

Why hoodies beat hats + sunscreen

The hood plus a cap creates full neck and ear coverage — the two spots hikers burn worst and reapply sunscreen least. Thumbholes cover the backs of hands. And unlike SPF 50 (which most people apply at half thickness, getting ~SPF 15), fabric protection is constant and total.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't a long-sleeve hoodie too hot for summer?

Modern sun fabrics are engineered to feel cooler than bare skin in direct sun — they block radiant heat while wicking sweat. Desert guides, paddlers and thru-hikers swear by them; our testers converted within one trip.

Does UPF wash out?

Fabric UPF comes from weave density, fiber type and color — it doesn't wash out. Some garments add UV-absorbing treatments that fade slightly over years of washing, but a tight weave keeps most protection for the garment's life.

Do I still need sunscreen with UPF clothing?

Only on exposed skin: face (unless the hood's up with a cap), hands without thumbholes, and any gaps. That's a palm-sized application instead of a full-body chore.
