Tents & Sleep Systems guides
- Sleeping Pad Packed Size vs. Comfort: How to Choose the Right Trade-Off
Thicker, wider, foam-heavier pads sleep more comfortably but pack larger and weigh more. Air pads pack smallest, self-inflating pads are bulkier, and closed-cell foam is bulkiest, usually riding outside the pack. Side sleepers generally need about 2.5+ inches; back sleepers can often manage 1.5–2 inches. Vehicle campers can mostly ignore packed size; bikepackers can't.
- Pack Rain Covers vs. Dry Bags: How to Choose a Protection System
For most backpackers, the sleeping bag, clothes and electronics belong in waterproof bags or a pack liner. A rain cover is an optional outer layer that keeps the pack shell from soaking up water in showers. It leaves the back panel exposed, so don't rely on it alone in prolonged rain; the NPS advises bagging clothes and sleeping bag even with a cover.
- How to Choose a Low-Impact Campsite for a Small Tent
Check local rules first. In popular areas, use an established site or tent pad and stay on its bare core. In untouched areas, only if skilled in Leave No Trace, choose an unused durable spot, stay one night, and restore it. Always avoid lightly worn sites, camp 200 feet from water and well off trails, never reshape the ground, and watch for dead limbs.

Better sleep or clever gimmick? Two of our testers switched to hammocks years ago; three stayed on the ground. Here's what each system really costs and delivers.
