How to Wash and Reproof a Rain Jacket: The 30-Minute DWR Refresh

If your rain jacket 'wets out' — the face fabric darkens and stops beading — you probably don't need a new jacket. You need to wash the one you have. Here's the routine our editors run every season.
Why jackets wet out
The waterproof membrane (Gore-Tex and friends) almost never fails first. What fails is the DWR — the durable water repellent coating on the face fabric. Dirt, body oils and campfire smoke clog it, the fabric stops beading, and once the face fabric soaks, sweat can't escape. You get wet from the inside, and the jacket gets blamed unfairly.
The 30-minute refresh
1. Wash. Front-loading machine, warm water, and a technical cleaner (Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash — never regular detergent, which leaves hydrophilic residue). Zip everything, close the Velcro, gentle cycle, extra rinse. 2. Reactivate. Tumble dry on low-medium for 20 minutes. Heat alone often restores 80% of DWR performance on a clean jacket. 3. Reproof (if needed). If water still doesn't bead on the shoulders and hood, apply a spray-on DWR (better for lined jackets) or wash-in treatment (fine for unlined), then tumble again to cure it.
How often?
For regular use: wash 2–3 times per season, reproof once a year. Dirty-but-beading beats clean-but-ignored every time — and washing can't hurt a membrane, despite the myth.
When the jacket really is dead
Retirement signs: delamination (the inner layer bubbling or peeling, usually at the hood and shoulders), seam tape lifting, or the membrane itself leaking after a proper wash-and-reproof. Then — and only then — shop our rain jacket tests.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use regular detergent on Gore-Tex?
Avoid it. Standard detergents leave surfactant residue that attracts water and kills DWR. Technical cleaners cost $10 and last a season.
Spray-on or wash-in DWR?
Spray-on for jackets with a lining or insulation (treats only the outer fabric). Wash-in is easier and fine for simple unlined shells.
Does tumble drying damage waterproof jackets?
No — moderate heat is how DWR reactivates. Low-medium for 20–30 minutes is the standard recommendation from Gore itself. Avoid high heat on taped seams.
